The dollar or percentage loss that should only be exceeded 5% of the time over a given horizon.

What is Value-at-Risk (95%)?

VaR at 95% says: with 95% confidence, losses will not exceed this number. It is widely used in regulation but criticized for ignoring how bad the tail beyond it can be.
