Reading ETF holdings
An ETF's holdings are the stocks and other investments it owns, and its composition is that list with the weight of each. To see what stocks are in an ETF, type its ticker and press Look up. The list shows the fund's holdings in GNG's data, largest first.
A holding's weight is the share of the fund's money invested in it. A stock with an 8% weight makes up 8% of the fund, so its price moves the fund far more than a stock at 0.10%.
The Top 10 holdings row adds up the weights of the 10 largest positions. A high share means a few companies drive most of the fund's return, and a low share means the fund is spread across many stocks.
Each stock links to its GNG stock page when GNG has one. Holdings without a GNG page, such as shares listed outside the US, show without a link.
Fees and dividends
The expense ratio is the yearly fee a fund charges, as a share of the money you invest. The fund takes it out of its assets, so you never pay it as a separate bill. An expense ratio of 0.03% costs about $3 a year for every $10,000 invested, and 0.75% costs about $75.
The dividend yield is the dividends the fund paid over the last 12 months divided by its latest closing price, the same method GNG's dividend history pages use. The Dividends block also shows the payment schedule, the last ex-dividend date and the ETF's dividend history by year, so you can see whether its payouts have grown.
To see what a fee adds up to over 10, 20 or 30 years, try the expense ratio calculator.
About the data
Holdings come from fund filings and data providers, so a list can trail the fund by weeks or months. Each result shows the date of the holdings it uses.
Cash, options, swaps, futures and some shares listed outside the US may not appear in a list, so the weights can add up to less than 100%. The coverage row shows how much of the fund the listed holdings make up.
The lookup covers the US-listed ETFs whose holdings GNG tracks, plus a few mutual funds such as VTSAX. When GNG has no list for a fund, the page says so.
A worked example
Type VOO, an S&P 500 index ETF, and press Look up. The first rows show how many holdings VOO has, how much of the fund the list covers, the share its top 10 holdings make up and the date of the holdings.
The fund facts come next: the expense ratio, net assets and inception date, or N/A where GNG has no figure.
The sentence under the facts names the largest holding and its weight. Then come the holdings list, the sector mix and the Dividends block, with the 12-month dividend yield and the dividends paid each year.
ETF holdings list FAQ
- How do I see all the holdings in an ETF?
- Type the ETF's ticker, such as VOO or SCHD, and press Look up. The list shows each holding in GNG's data with its weight, largest first. Long lists open on 10 rows, and Show all opens the rest.
- What does an ETF hold?
- An ETF holds a basket of investments, most often stocks, and sometimes bonds, cash or shares of other funds. Each holding's weight is the share of the fund's money invested in it, so the largest weights move the fund the most.
- Why don't the weights add up to 100%?
- A list can leave out cash, options, swaps, futures and some shares listed outside the US, so its weights can add up to less than 100%. Funds that use leverage or options can add up to more. The page shows how much of the fund the listed holdings cover.
- Do ETFs change their holdings?
- Yes. Index ETFs change holdings when their index rebalances, often every quarter, and actively managed ETFs can trade any day. Each list shows the date of the holdings it uses.
- What is an ETF expense ratio?
- It is the yearly fee a fund charges, shown as a percentage of the money you invest. An expense ratio of 0.03% costs about $3 a year for every $10,000 invested.
- Is this ETF holdings list free?
- Yes. It is free to use with no account and no sign-up.
