Additionally, Alteogen Inc. experienced a surge after announcing a potential 4.4 trillion won licensing deal with Novartis, while Korean steel stocks also rallied on expectations of benefiting from pipeline construction for the Alaska liquefied natural gas project, following comments from U.S. President Donald Trump.

South Korea's semiconductor exports surged 209% year-over-year in August to a record $46.65 billion, accounting for nearly half of the country's total goods exports. This boom is largely driven by AI infrastructure demand. While positive for the economy, economists are concerned about the potential impact if this rapid growth slows down abruptly, especially given challenges in other traditional sectors and ongoing monetary policy tightening.

SK hynix is investing over $4 billion to establish its first HBM production base in the U.S., located in Indiana, with mass production slated for the second half of 2029. This initiative aims to stabilize the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, create approximately 7,000 jobs, and foster strong economic cooperation between the U.S. and South Korea, including an R&D partnership with Purdue University and a veteran recruitment program. The facility will combine advanced packaging of wafers from Korea with a new "Made in USA" approach for AI memory products.

SK hynix has broken ground on its first U.S. high bandwidth memory production hub in Purdue Research Park, a $4 billion advanced packaging fabrication and R&D facility for AI memory. This investment is driven by Purdue University's innovation and talent development, with Purdue leading U.S. semiconductor reshoring efforts through its Semiconductor Degrees Program. The project is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs and foster significant economic development and research collaboration in the advanced packaging field.

SK Hynix shares dropped 5% after union workers narrowly rejected a tentative wage deal, primarily due to concerns over a stock-based bonus structure. Workers accepted a 6.3% raise but rejected a proposal to pay 60% of performance bonuses in company shares, fearing concentration risk. The rejection sends the company back to the negotiation table, raising concerns about potential disruptions to High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) deliveries critical for AI customers.
